DON'T ENJOY YOUR JOB? WHY ARE YOU STILL THERE?
If you are in a dead-end job that you dread every morning when you get out of bed, then you need to make a change ASAP. If you are not maximizing your talent, then you are probably not living life to its fullest. As Steve Harvey once said, “If you don’t JUMP, you will never SOAR.” Don’t be afraid to take that “jump” away from your steady, but unfulfilling job. Venture out and do something you TRULY enjoy! It might be risky, but if you tackle your goal with 100% effort and dedication, then it will likely pan out in your favor. You will be happier and so will everyone around you.
So with that being said, let’s touch up that resume and get it ready to submit to NEW employers that will allow you to live out your career goals.
VALUE YOUR FRIEND'S OPINION . . . BUT NOT TOO MUCH
Throughout my career, I have had many clients show off my work to their best friends. More often than not, this ends in a positive manner, as majority of these friends will confirm how much more effective the new resume is. There are always exceptions, though! I want to share a recent example.
Six weeks ago, I completed a sales resume for a mid-level professional. I showcased his sales achievements and customized the resume and cover letter directly toward the provided job postings that were forwarded to me. This, in my humble opinion, was a highly effective resume; however, the client's best friend reviewed it and allegedly "tore it apart." Those were the exact words from my client, although, no specific examples were given. The client indicated that his friend decided to take it upon himself to "correct" the resume that I had created. The client was apparently content with his friend's revisions, but wanted to send me the new version so I could have a quick look and possibly proofread it for him. I agreed to look it over . . . what a mess! When I opened the PDF attachment of my client's "corrected" resume, I was in complete shock. The following is only a partial list of the issues and errors found on the new resume:
-resume was extended from 2 full pages to 2 full pages and 1 paragraph
-a generic header was created, which contained the wrong phone number for the client
-many spelling issues were located, including one instance where "pubic" was written instead of "public"
-power verbs and phrases were replaced by soft and weak verbiage, including the following:
"Talked to customers and made new sales everyday"
"Made sure that customers were happy with store products."
"Tried to resolve all co-worker problems in a fast manner."
...those are just three of the sentences with WEAK verbiage. This is the verbiage of a 14-year old's resume, not a mid-level professional. This resume would be frowned upon by over 95% of prospective employers.
Think twice before following your friend's advice on your new resume. If in doubt, please show your resume to 3 or 4 other friends and/or family members. By no means am I the "God of Resume Writing," but I do know more than the average Joe! Please trust my judgement, folks! You won't be sorry!
SOFT SKILLS ON A RESUME
Recently, I created a resume for a marketing professional. The client loved her resume, overall, but was concerned that I did not include some soft skills on her resume. In particular, she was disappointed that I did not list "Active Listening" as an "Area of Expertise." Yes, active listening is important and should not be taken for granted; however, when it comes to your resume, this "skill" does not set you apart from others, as it is a trait that virtually ANYBODY can write down. You only have one or two pages to "wow" a potential employer. If you use some of that valuable space on your document to list things like "active listening," then you are selling yourself short. You need to focus on concrete and quantitative facts, credentials, and highlights.
If you write a great resume, then your active listening skills will be displayed during your JOB INTERVIEW!
Good luck, job seekers!

RESUME WRITING - STRIVING FOR CLIENT SATISFACTION
Every now and then, somebody will ask what I love most about my profession. Writing is a passion of mine and this profession of Resume Writing has enabled me to put food on my table and spend more time with my family (working from home); however, the MAIN reason that this job continues to make me excitedly start the work day Monday through Friday is Customer Satisfaction! Nothing is more gratifying than hearing back from an overly excited client that just accepted his/her dream job after utilizing a resume that I created. This kind of news always has me smiling from ear to ear. During my professional resume writing career, I have compiled an extensive list of satisfied clients . . . and I intend on making that list MUCH MUCH larger! Below is a recent testimonial from a client in the Orlando, Florida area (Lake Mary). This is the kind of testimonial that brings sunshine to a writer’s day even when it’s overcast and raining! I love this job!
"Brian Munger is absolutely phenomenal and I was blown away at the resume he created for me. He took my 3 page resume and coverletter and condensed it to 2 page resume with coverletter that really presented me as a professional that is serious about my career and that would be a strong asset to a company. It has a very attractive layout that is easy to read and really highlights my skills, qualifications and experience right upfront. When companies are looking at your resume, you only have a few seconds to impress them, present what you’ve done and how that can apply to the job you are seeking. The resume and cover letter Brian created for me does exactly that. He wrote my experience and accomplishments in the language that companies are looking for, using industry specific key words to exemplify my career history and really sell my abilities. I was hesitant at first. I thought I had a good resume after spending days working on it and re-working it. But a friend strongly recommended that I get a professional to look at it because this is my career and future that are on-the-line. After receiving Brian’s resume and coverletter for me, in hindsight I wish I would have contacted Brian sooner. It is absolutely what I needed to sell my abilities to companies and get interviews. If you are questioning whether or not to have Brian look at your resume, don’t think about it. Absolutely have him create you a professional resume. This is your career and it is the best thing you could do to get in the door."
SUPPORT THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER
This site is devoted to creating new resumes and assisting individuals in attaining their career goals and objectives; however, this blog will be one exception . . .
My selfless wife has joined the fight against breast cancer and is participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-day fundraising event. She needs support to reach her fundraising goal of $2300.
Each participant of this event was required to write a story regarding their direct/indirect experiences with individuals fighting cancer. Below is her story
Welcome and thank you for taking the time to join our efforts in fighting for the cure! My team members have many personal stories to share about each persons individual experiences with breast cancer and each of us has our own reasons for wanting to participate in the walk. However, our goal is the same and we are committed to being a part of finding a cure for a disease that effects so many women and men. "Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and it is the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide."
In my personal journey of caring for a friend, sister, and co-walker, Diana Harrington, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, I found myself surrounded by many very young brave women who were fighting their own battles with breast cancer. I had the great pleasure of meeting an angel named Xiomara Brens, who at the age of 34 lost her fight with breast cancer. I met a fighter, Mary DeCastro, who continues her battle against breast cancer at the age of 40. And I met a survivor, who at the age of 22, was one of the youngest woman in the state of Florida to be diagnosed with breast cancer and she has been declared in remission. Each woman provided me with a lesson to be learned and helped me discover a purpose in life and for my cause.
Our team is working hard to raise all of the money necessary for each of our teammates to raise $2300 in order to qualify for the walk. We are training and constantly seeking ways to keep the effort moving forward.
Thank you for supporting me as I take an amazing journey in the fight to end breast cancer! The Susan G. Komen 3-Day TM is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. Net proceeds from the 3-Day walk are invested in breast cancer research and community programs.
Your support is crucial to our success.
